Verification of Financial Statements by The Federal Reserve Board Revised May, 1929 $34.95

Hard to Find
26 pages very good condition
5 3/4 X 9
This was published about 5 months before the stock market crash of 1929. A significant publication in the history of accounting practices and auditing procedures and standards. Publication showed a growing realization of the impracticability of uniform procedures to fit the variety of situations encountered in practice.

The opening paragraph stated: The extent of the verification will be determined by the conditions in each concern. In some cases, the auditor may find it necessary to verify a substantial portion or all of the transactions recorded upon the books. In others, where the system of internal check is good, tests only may suffice. The responsibility for the extent of the work required must be assumed by the auditor. Through a merger the United Fruit Company was formed on March 30, 1899.
The company introduced the name Chiquita and the Miss Chiquita character in 1944
In 1962 United Fruit creates the individual banana sticker label. The small blue stickers with the Chiquita logo are affixed to the fruit and the company makes a strong advertisement campaign to promote the consumption of its branded banana.
After a merger United Fruit became United Brands Company in 1970

1938 Pamphlet Death Begins At 40 (Forty) - Auto Insurance Related $18.00

34 pages 6" x 9"
Good clean condition back cover has several creases.
You might think of this as a somber birthday card for someone turning 40, but it's actually an informational and adversorial publication by The Travelers Insurance Company of Hartford CT, "distributed free in the interest of street and highway safety.". The statistics that the book uses are from 1937, so I'm assuming this was produced in 1938. Their advertising department must have had fun finding the many ways to illustrate & encourage safe driving. All content is listed as copyright free except for the Grant Wood painting Death on The Ridge Road that was loaned by permission for print in this publication by Cole Porter.

Vintage Booklet: "How To Use Corona The Portable Typewriter" - $23.00

There's no date, but this booklet mentions how to change the ribbon on the Corona Four. In a quick search on the web, I saw the typewriter pictured on the cover as being from around 1928.
The booklet is in excellent condition. The original retailer's name is stamped on the front and back: Service Typewriter Exchange, Holyke, Mass.
I'd guess the booklet came with one of the typewriters pictured and if you own one of these typewriters without the book, then you'll need to get this.

©1911 The Ronald Press Co. (first year of printing no edition sited)  168 pages
Contents

VII: Making Arguments Effective
VIII: Making Suggestions Effective

"Any man will sign a note for a thousand dollars if a revolver is held against his head... The law, however, will not hold him for the payment of the note, on the ground that it was signed under duress. A man convinced by the sheer force of logic is likely to avoid the very action which would seem to be the only natural result of the conviction thus secured. This situation is expressed by the familiar proverb, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." -from ChapterII "An Analysis of Deliberation". Explores the business applications of psychology: getting employees to work smarter &your customers to buy more, this is an early guide to the science of selling ideas and products, by a pioneer in the psychology of advertising. Explores the unexpected power of suggestion, use in advertising with 15 illustrated examples.... How do people reach decisions? How can you make that info work for you. Far ahead of its time, this is still a great resource.

"Westerly Business College & School of Shorthand and Typewriting" pamphlet $18.00

"Westerly Business College & School of Shorthand and Typewriting" pamphlet. Wells Building Broad Street George LaMunyon Principal
There's an attribution on the cover to Ames & Rollinson Co. NY - presumably the publisher. I could not find a date. It's probably from the early 1900s. The glassine cover page is still on it, though it's obviously in rough condition. But it's been there all this time, I'm not going to be the one to remove it. And yes, that is a mouse chew in the lower left of the book. Many of the pages are dog-eared. At one time the book had been folded in half. I can imagine the eager young enrollee with this booklet in folded in his back pocket imagining his or her future career. The typewriter on the front cover is a Remington. Photos include the College Building - the third of floor of a commercial brick building with at least 3 store fronts, no readable signs, but one's a barber shop, and there's a bicycle parked out front. The literature indicates it's their 8th year affiliated with Westerly Business College. Also inside is a photo of George Lamunyon, B.S., M. Accts., Principal, a photo of the study room and a group of students, the typerwriting room, tlegraph room.
24 pages. 6" x 8 3/4"

But the highlight of the pamphlet is the back cover is this wonderful 'calligraphy' illustration of a bird.
Below the bird the text offers employers "free of charge" - competent office help. It's not clear to me if they are offering students free of charge or just the match making service free, but in either case, I suspect its too late to take them up on the offer.

The Business Of the Household  by CW Taber 1918 $33.00

Author: Taber, Clarence Wilbur,
from a series published by J.B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia called Lippincott's Home Manuals (an early predecessor to the Idiot's Guide series???)
438 pp
6" x 8 1/2"
Has a nice graphic cover. Binding is a little weak in the front. Otherwise looks to be clean for its age.

Divided into Four parts covering 35 chapters. The Four Parts are
Part 1: Fundamental Principles of Household Finance
Part 2: Factors in the Family Budget - Necessities
Part 3: Factors in the Family Budget - Higher Life
Part 4: Legal & Business Status of the Family

From an economic & sociological stand point it probably gives a good idea of what it was like living in the early part of the 20th century
