Help in PETA's campaign to stop the use of Fur.

HRC Editor’s note: The following letter is from from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). We encourage our members and friends to read it and to join this worthwhile campaign on behalf of the rabbits. Thank you.

Dear Friend of Rabbits,
I am writing today to ask for your organization’s help with PETA’s campaign to stop the suffering and slaughter of rabbits used for their fur. Sadly, the fur industry is attempting to reach a broader market by focusing on less expensive fur items, including rabbit fur. Distributing PETA’s new rabbit leaflets and posters – which you can view and order at PETALiterature.com – is a great way for you to get people thinking twice about supporting the cruelty that rabbits endure in the fur industry.

As you know, rabbits are delightful, friendly animals who have individual personalities and quirks and who should not be reduced to “trim.” Unfortunately, hundreds of millions of rabbits are slaughtered every year for their fur. They spend their entire lives confined to tiny metal cages, often with no shelter from weather extremes and never having a chance to dig, run, or play. To kill the rabbits, farmers break their necks – causing slow death by suffocation – or smash their skulls before stringing them up by their legs to cut off their heads and skin them.

We are happy to report that retailers such as Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, and American Eagle have responded to consumers’ concerns and refuse to sell rabbit fur. But some retailers and customers aren’t aware of the suffering involved in every cuff and collar, so the bunnies need your help!

These animals desperately need your help – and your actions can make a difference. Just a couple of weeks after PETA launched a campaign against retailer Forever 21 this past fall, the company agreed to make the compassionate choice to stop selling fur forever. Won’t you please include an item in your organization’s newsletter about why it is important to avoid rabbit fur or send an e-mail message addressing this issue to your members and supporters? Urge them to write letters of complaint to stores that sell rabbit fur, such as bebe Stores, Wet Seal Inc., Arden B., and Guess?

To organize an eye-catching demonstration or even something as simple as informal leafleting with our new anti-rabbit-fur posters and literature, please contact me at 757-622-7382, extension 8286, or via e-mail to DebbieC@peta.org. Please let me know that you will help us with this critical campaign. I look forward to hearing from you about this matter of life and death for rabbits.
