1901 London Graphic Cover - Cinderella A Portrait by John Bacon Original Magazine cover - $17.00

S&H included for US sales only. All others contact us first.

Cover of The London Graphic Christmas Number 1901 - in found condition.
Size: 12" X 16"

Edges darkened from handling and frayed. Scuffs on picture of Cinderella. I don't know if this is part of a series done by John H. F. Bacon (Royal Academy), but I do know that the girl in this picture seems too young to go to the Prince's ball, and her bed time at this age is more likely 8:00 pm than midnight.

We do not separate intact magazines, no matter how much more we might make for selling prints and plates separately. This item is from an orphaned lot.

Description: These are all that remain from an early 19th century dictionary of arts and science. I don't know which one. But the following engravers names are on the various plates:
H Anderson, J Boyd, W Harison, F Kearny, Kneass, J H Seymour, S Seymour, B Tanner
The plates are numbered XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXI, XXII and XXVI.
I found a few of the engravers such as F. Kearny, born in Perth Amboy, NJ, who practiced engraving in Philadelphia 1810 to his death in 1833. William Kneass is an engraver who lived from 1780-1840.
Condition: fair condition. In spite of the damage to the plates from insect and foxing, they're still charming. In fact, the chewed paper adds a certain esthetic and could be quite nice framed.
Size: 8 7/8" X 11 1/2"
11 pages

Eddystone Lighthouse Painting by Percy HawKen ca. 1900 - $169.00

<-- Click image to left for more pics
S&H included for US sales (all others contact us  first)
Unframed Oil painting - signed on lower right P. HawKen (with K capitalized). On lower left he labeled it "Eddystone Lighthouse"
On the back is the art supplier's label for the canvas marked, "Chas. G. Calder Artists Materials Providence RI" A google search shows that Calder's store was established in 1876 and last found mention was concerning a report of fire in 1895.
Penciled on the back also is some info presumably about the artist though hard to read. What I get out of it is,
"Percy Hawken
370 Smith Street
Plymouth (and 2 or more letters beginning with either a B or and R)
4th line illegible (and maybe non-existent)

2 ships in background
full moon partially behind cloud
silhouettes of several figures on lower deck
18" X 8"

Condition: The painting has 2 tears near the top. See photos. One of these has an old repair which can be seen on the back. It could use repair and cleaning.

Research and Conjecture:
From illustrations of the 4 Eddystone lighthouses built, this looks to be Smeaton's, the 3rd lighthouse which was in place until 1877. Subsequently when the 4th lighthouse was built, the upper portions of Smeaton's lighthouse was rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe, in Plymouth, as a memorial. The re-erected tower on the Hoe is now a tourist attraction. The Eddystone Lighthouse is the best known because of its influence on lighthouse design and its importance in the development of concrete for building. - Curiously current photograph's of the Eddystone lighthouse shows the stub of Smeaton's tower, which you can see in the painting. It's possible that the artist attempted to create a memory of the original lighthouse while showing it's final state. Or could the stub be from a previous lighthouse? The painting does not coincide with the lighthouse at Plymouth Hoe, and the artist must have intentionally painted it in its original location, either as he saw it or imagined it.

I could find almost nothing about Percy Hawken. 2 locations turn up. One was born in Cornwall UK in the 1880s and the other was born in Providence RI about 1901. - So here's my theory. The Percy Hawken of Plymouth / Cornwall came to Providence RI in the US about 1900 to visit his kinsmen. While there, he bought the canvas and painted this memento of his homeland to leave with his cousins. On the birth of their son these cousins named their son Percy to honor their cousin from the UK.

Vintage Hand Painted copy Postimpressionist painting originally by A.P. Ryder titled "Toilers of the Sea" - $210

<-- Click image to left for more pics
S&H included for US sales (all others contact us first)

This vintage hand painted copy is signed T Miko. The original painting by Albert Pinkham Ryder titled "Toilers of the Sea" sits in a museum . You can still hang a nice copy on your walls.
Palette Knife painting on canvas. This has been painted in passionate strokes similar to Van Gogh.
Pictured are 2 men in a skiff (single sailed boat). I don't know if this is dawn or dusk, the sun or the moon?

This painting has some age. Probably early to middle 20th Century. The stretcher is stamped "Anco Bilt Glendale NY" At their website Anco, which is still in business. It was in Glendale from about 1905 to 1990. This painting was once framed. The paint is worn along the edge where it once sat in a frame and there is a nail hole on either side where it was once nailed into the frame. There's one paint fleck missing in the middle front foreground.

18" X 14 1/4"

The original (Click here) for a description sits in the Metropolitan Museum of Art since approx. 1915 I'd guess that a student artist sat in the gallery and copied this 70 to 80 years ago.

Bicycle Racers Painting on canvas

Signed "Francine '69" on lower right in 'pink'. clear enough to read .
25" x 34 1/4" painting on canvas (I think it's an oil but I'm no expert

Impressionistic style painting really captures the feeling of being right in the midst of a bike race. The artist, "Francine", approaches this subject with a flair for the movement and energy of a spirited race.
Has tear across top (visible in photo) and it really needs to be cleaned. No frame.

Vintage hand colored photo Gondola San Marco Campanile Doge Venice Italy - $95.00

Gondola with the Piazza San Marco Campanile (bell tower) & Doge’s Palace in the background - Venice Italy

<-- Click image to left for more pics
S&H included for US sales (all others contact us  first)
Hand colored Vintage framed and matted photo of Gondola with the Piazza San Marco Campanile (bell tower) & Doge’s Palace in the background - Venice Italy

This is most likely a professional photograph - probably sold as a souvenir. A closeup photo of the gondola shows the clarity of detail, including the wood carving on the enclosed gondola cabin. My guess is that this dates from the beginning of the 1900s. though whether this is the tower that collapsed in 1902 or the exact replica that was finished in 1912, I have no idea. The bell tower of the St. Mark's Basilica is one of Venice's most recognizable landmarks.

The photo has some condition issues. Check the photos that I've provided. There is spotting, though most of it seems to be on the water, where it's less noticeable. I almost wonder if there was something in the color wash that protected the main features from this spotting. I took the photo out of the frame once to clean the glass and photograph it better, but as you might notice in one of the pictures, a little speck of dirt stuck to the glass on the upper left corner and I didn't notice it till it was back in the frame. Oh well!

Large Carved Wood Bust - Rasta Head - Painted Black ca. 1960 (Bob Marley ish) $145.00

<-- Click image to left for more pics
S&H included for US sales (all others contact us first)
Beautifully featured oversize wood carving by an unknown skilled artist. "Your Friend" is painted on his neck in red. There's also a trace of red paint under his right eye. It strikes me as a portrait of a serious young man ( in dreadlocks) deep in thought. I don't know the significance of the title, "Your Friend" though it crossed my mind that this could be a religious reference. (then again, it could have been added later? ) He's painted or stained to look like ebony, though you can see where the paint is chipped, or where the bottom was never painted that it was carved from a light colored hardwood.
It does have some minor cracks and the picture looking down on the top of his head indicates that it may have been glued to fill or repair splitting. As a woodcarver myself, I know that some splitting and cracking are almost inevitable in large pieces of this type, especially if the wood was still green when it was carved. Though these spots were not repaired in a way that a conservator might do, the piece has been stable in all the years we've owned it.
Dimensions: 16 1/2" tall; 13" wide; approx. 8 3/4" deep.
I do not know the age. My mom bought him for me in the 1980s. I'm just guessing that he's 1960ish.

Vintage 1940's Antebellum Southern Belles - Ladies Turner Signed Prints on Canvas - larger size - $77.00

<-- Click image to left for more pics
S&H included for US sales (all others contact us  first)
2 Turner Prints on Canvas. Original peach / salmon colored frames. These are the larger size of the ones that I've seen. Frames are 13 1/2" X 15 1/2". The prints are approx. 10 1/2" X 12 1/4". They need to be re-backed. The waviness you see in the pictures disappears when I press on the cardboard. With a stiffer back, these will disappear. There also seems to be several specks on the back of the glass that is not on the prints. These prints are in good condition though I had trouble getting a good picture. If you compare the different pictures you will see that most if not all the defects that seem to be in one photo of the picture are not in the next.

Lady with fan is signed in 4 places - at the base of the flower stand; under the rug; on the bottom right; and on the lower left right at the edge of the frame where it says "Copyright 1942, Turner Mfg. Co. Chicago USA". The lady with the bouquet has 2 visible signatures.

Vintage Early to mid 20th Century Print of Lady in Blue - Framed $42.00

Pictured is a sitting girl who seems to be about 20 years old. She's all dressed up, wearing a blue dress and a cream colored shawl with a red and blue floral design. She's holding a pink rose (or carnation) which undoubtedly matches her pink complexion.
Unsigned. Could easily imagine this from a famous painting of the late 19th century. The colors are good on the picture. There is some spotting on the background paper. The blue painted frame once had something attached on the top.

Picture is 6" X 8 1/2"
Frame is 12 1/4" X 15 1/4"
